I’m pleased to announce our latest Suburban Snapshot, written by our guest contributor Jane Kim.  Jane, her husband and two young children recently relocated from Brooklyn NY to Westchester County NY.  Jane is currently a SAHM.  Her professional career has focused around marketing, events and promotions for global consumer product companies and professional sports.  We’d like to thank her publicly for authoring this edition of #SuburbanSnapshots: Life in Rye NY.

Welcome to Rye NY

Located in southern Westchester County, Rye is a small, tranquil town with just shy of 16,000 residents located on the Long Island Sound. With more than 14 miles of coastline, Rye’s coastal setting is a major draw for the residents.

Rye is decidedly an upscale suburban community which offers an appealing combination of great schools, low crime, short commute to NYC, and tranquil village vibe. The picturesque downtown offers a New England feel with walkable streets, mom and pop shops, and historic landmarks. Rye is located approximately 27 miles from midtown Manhattan. The express train ride will take you about 37 minutes to get to Grand Central on the Stamford line of the Metro North. Rye is also conveniently located where I-95 and I-287 meet.

A Day In The Life

Because of its size, there is a strong sense of community that is welcoming to newcomers and with many local events throughout the year, it is easy to get to know the town and meet the people. The Rye Newcomers and Neighbors’ Club will introduce you to other newcomers and neighbors with organized activities and events like coffee breaks and play groups. Rye also has a online Facebook moms group that is a helpful resource for all things Rye.

The main thoroughfare of Rye is Purchase Street. Here you will find many shops and restaurants. June & Ho has been serving the community delicious sandwiches and prepared foods for more than 30 years.

Local favorite Patisserie Salzburg serves up fresh baked good daily. Rosemary & Vine and newly opened Granola Bar give you a place for a relaxing and healthy option for breakfast and lunch.

In the evening, Village Social and Red Pony offer a lively vibe while Ruby’s Oyster Bar and Rye Grill and Bar offer a more traditional evening out.

On hot summer days, it’s always fun to walk to town for homemade ice cream at Longford’s or serve yourself fro-yo at Peachwave.

For a little retail therapy, visit Clutch or Havana Jeans for on-trend fashion and accessories. Sarza offers home décor and accessories from South Africa curated by a South African expat. The owner of the local bookstore, Arcade Bookstore, will happily order any book for you if he does not have it on the shelves.

Family & Kid Life In Rye NY

The Rye City School District is one of the major draws for families to the area. Rye schools have been awarded New York State School of Excellence and National Ribbon School of Excellence honors. There are three elementary schools, Osborn, Midland and Milton. All three feed into Rye Middle and Rye High School. Learn more about Rye School’s ratings on Niche and Greatschools.

Families have many options for recreation in this family-oriented town. In additional to the many private country and shore clubs, Rye offers many municipal parks and clubs for residents. Rye Golf Club & Pool boasts an 18-hole golf course and large swimming pools for adult and kids. Rye Town Park is a 62-acre park with a duck pond, walking paths and Oakland Beach.

If you are looking for a nature retreat, explore the 47-acre Rye Nature Center, the 173-acre Marshland Conservancy, or 179-acre Edith G Read Natural Park and Wildlife Sanctuary. All three are great for hikes to explore the local floral and fauna.

Rye is most known for Rye Playland, one of America’s oldest amusement park and a historic landmark. The Art Deco inspired park is home to the Dragon Coaster, one of the last remaining wooden roller coasters left in the United States. The amusement complex also has an ice skating rink, boardwalk, beach and soon to be renovated swimming pool. The Westchester Children’s Museum is also located on the boardwalk. With sweeping views of the Sound, the museum offers a fun and enriching experience for children.

The Rye YMCA offers many activities and classes for the whole family and includes two swimming pools, fitness center, and summer camps. Rye Recreation also offers a multitude of sports, fitness and art classes available to all residents of the city of Rye at special rates. The Rye library (Rye Free Reading Room) supports the local community by offering many free activities for all ages, from after-school programs to music classes for pre-school aged children.  Throughout the year there are wonderful community events and parades for people of all ages to participate and enjoy.

Rye’s excellent school system, well maintained houses and village, and access to forest and beach is what draws many to call this town home. Small-town charm, safe neighborhoods, and a family-oriented community is what makes them stay.
