Guest Profile Week #5:  Ah-Young & her Family

Where did you move from?

We used to live on the Upper West Side in Manhattan; then we moved to Pelham (lived there for about 3 years); and finally, to Larchmont in 2011.

What were a couple of the deciding factors for moving to the suburbs?

The need for more space and less noise; raising children in a safer space; good schools and living in a tight-knit community.

Are you a Northern, Southern, Rivertowns, Sound Shore or Central Westchester resident & why?

Seems like we are Sound Shore and Southern Westchester. There wasn’t a particular reason, it just made sense for us commute wise (as I work in Manhattan and my husband in the Bronx).

What do you like most about your home’s community?

We love the close-knit feel and diversity. I also have many colleagues from work who live in the same village. It’s close to the city but far enough that it feels quaint. I also love the conveniences – shops, the farmer’s market, stuff for the kids, parks, restaurants, etc.  The bonus is that Larchmont is a village, but part of the Town of Mamaroneck. Therefore, we are able to utilize both advantages.

What do you appreciate most about your suburban home?

We live at the very end of a dead-end street with a view that looks down the street. We love seeing all the kids on our street play together. We also have a yearly block party which is a great way to meet new families and bond with current ones.

Fill in the Blanks.  My Favorite….

Restaurant = too many to choose from: (in no particular order): Lenny’s (steak & everything); Polpettina (great cocktails); and Franki and Fannucci’s (brick-oven pizza). We also enjoy LT (yummy salads); Sherwoods (wings); Encore Bistro (mussels); and Bradley’s (desserts). There is such a diverse selection in our village (Thai, Indian, Persian, Argentinian, Italian, French, Japanese) which gives Larchmonters so many options and I could go on and on about them…  we also enjoy Cocoa (hot chocolate & chocolate bark); E-shot Cafe (flat white!); and Fjord (love their spicy tuna rolls and catering options).

Park = We love Flint Park – even had a couple of birthday parties there for our kids during the summer which was so much fun!  Manor Park is also lovely with a breathtaking view of the water.  For outdoor activities, my kids like to ride bikes and scooters; use their sleds during the winter; and do sports (tennis, soccer, etc).

Workout / Gym = I see a trainer who uses the gym space at  Pure Fitness which is convenient!

Local Retailers = My daughter loves Stephanie’s Kloset and my boys love Toy Box and Miller’s (in Mamaroneck). We also like to go to Three Goms for stationery stuff.  My personal favorite is Chakarr (amazing jewelry) and Winetasters (we recently did a sake tasting there!)

Children’s Activity = My kids love all of the Town of Mamaroneck Rec Department offerings! They have done ice skating; swim team; summer camp; as well as other classes (chess, lego, cooking, etc.) My youngest loves nature and did Sheldrake Environmental Center’s nature camps (absolute fun!), even having a birthday party there.  We have also enjoyed: Larchmont Rec Soccer & Foster Soccer Camps; Larchmont-Mamaroneck Youth Lacrosse (LMYL); Mamaroneck Youth Football League (flag football); and Tae Kwon Do at CMAC (Mamaroneck).

Any advice for people considering a move from NYC or anywhere in the world to Westchester Living?

It can be daunting because there are so many choices – location, type of house, and community. Try to get a feel for each city/town/area, and pick at least three important factors that matter to you and your family in terms of a decision. It may feel like you are disconnecting from the big city (many don’t like letting go and you think you’re losing out) but remember you are settling into a new one and becoming a part of that community!
